Roman road found under Utrecht

 Tuesday 10 December 2013

Archeologists have discovered part of a Roman road under the Dom square in central Utrecht, Nos television reports on Tuesday. The remains were found during excavation work for an underground public centre. The northern border of the Roman Empire ran through the Netherlands from Katwijk, via Utrecht and Nijmegen to Germany. A Roman fort stood on the site of the Dom square and formed the heart of the settlement. The road remains will be covered by a glass walkway when the new centre is finished and remain visible to the general public, Nos said. ©
